Colombia - Floods

Since early December, 2010, heavy rains in the northern regions of Colombia have caused widespread flooding and landslides. As of January 11, 2011, there were 304 deaths, 292 injured and 59 persons reported missing. The estimated population that is affected is 2,217,226. 141 health institutions and 324,634 houses are reported damaged.

The Government of Colombia has strengthened the National System for Disaster Prevention and Assistance. A UNDAC team was in the country to provide technical assistance.

PAHO/WHO is moving forward in the acquisition of medical kits, community oral rehydration units, and household water treatment equipment. The agency is in the process of recruiting an epidemiologist to support the Government's Situation Room, in liaison with the Ministry of Social Welfare (MPS) and the National Health Institute (NHI).

Brazil - Floods and Landslides

Heavy rains that started on January 11th, 2011 in the regions around Rio de Janeiro have caused floods and landslides affecting 85 municipalities. 20 are in a state of emergency.

More than 500 people died and it is estimated that several thousand people have lost their homes. 120,652 people are reported to be directly affected as of January 11, 2011.

Prompt response by national authorities included deployment of technical teams and relief material that was hampered by difficult access, lack of electricity, and communication. The Brazilian government is working to speed up provision of funds to municipalities of Nova Friburgo, Petropolis, Teresopolis and Sumidouro that were severely affected by the rains.

Organizations are working to provide affected people with drinking water, mattresses, blankets, food items, health care and other aid to cover immediate needs.

The Inter-American Development Bank will provide a $200,000 grant from the emergency support fund.

PAHO/WHO is closely monitoring the situation.
