Wahroonga, New South Wales - In response to the worst natural disaster in Brazil's history, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) has begun the distribution of aid that will assist close to 1000 households.
On Wednesday, January 12 the region surrounding Rio de Janeiro was drenched by some of the heaviest rains on record in Brazil. Three major cities, along with at least 80 smaller towns experienced major flooding and deadly landslides. It is feared the death toll may reach over 1,000 in the coming days.
ADRA Brazil, with support from the ADRA Network, which has a presence in more than 120 countries world-wide, will provide blankets, bed sheets and complete hygiene kits for one month for more than 4,500 people. ADRA Australia has committed support from its Disaster Preparedness and Response Fund, which enables timely and appropriate emergency support to communities in Australia and Overseas.
"Amidst the calamity in our own country we are also acting to assist those affected in Brazil," said ADRA Australia CEO, Jonathan Duffy. "Our contribution will help hundreds of Brazilians in their recovery."
In the past twelve months ADRA Australia has responded to numerous international disasters including the Haitian earthquake and Pakistan floods, along with national emergencies including recent flooding in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. ADRA Australia currently holds formal agreements to provide emergency accommodation during times of disaster in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Western Australia.
